Safeguarding Your Financial Information and Identity
Be Careful When You Apply for Jobs
We all understand potential employers need to make background and reference checks before they hire a new employee. In some cases, those background checks include criminal and credit checks, depending on the nature of the position, but if a recruiter asks for your Social Security number, think twice. Some identity thieves pose as recruiters. They find your resume on an online job site, contact you, and ask for your personal information in order to conduct a “background check.” Then they use your information to steal your identity.
Before you provide information, check out the recruiter or prospective employer. Make sure the call or email you receive is legitimate. In fact, never provide personal information by email. Request a phone number and make sure the caller has legitimate reasons to require your information.
