Do You Own Multiple Charge Cards? Leave Some at Home

The average American owns more than three credit cards; if you're like most people, you probably keep all your cards in your wallet or pocketbook. But what happens if your wallet or pocketbook is lost or stolen? All your credit cards – along with other valuables – are instantly at risk.

Consider only taking the card or cards you need. If you are heading to the grocery store, leave retail charge cards at home. And only take one credit card with you – that way if you do lose your wallet, your other cards are safe, and you will only have to alert one credit card company that your card has been lost. Not only will your financial identity be safer, but you'll reduce the hassles you face if the worst does happen.

And while you're at it, keep contact numbers for all your charge cards and accounts in a safe place – that way if you need to call to report lost cards, you can do so quickly and easily.
